Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea Animals, Mounts and Pets
Updated
In Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea you can tame almost any animal you meet: sneak up, pet it, give it food, and come back the next day. Mounts get you across ice, sand and water, pets give buffs, and barn animals make money. Here's how taming works, which animals are worth a barn slot, and how to deal with the wild ones that drain your stamina.
How taming works
- Sneak. Hold the sneak button as you approach, or the animal (and its herd) runs off.
- Pet it. Press A next to it. That's about one music note of friendship, once per animal per day.
- Feed it. Right after petting, give it food, such as a foraged mushroom: about two more notes. Some animals, like polar bears, warm up faster than others.
- Come back. At 4 notes the animal is tamed and asks to come home with you. Usually that's two days. The map remembers where you've seen each animal, so it's easy to find again.
Space is the limit: each tamed animal needs a slot in your barn or house, and barn upgrades add more. Taming 10 animals earns Animal Center Dispatcher, and taming every type earns Animal Protector (held by 0.6% of Steam players in launch week).
Animals and what they do
| Animal | Type | What it's for | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horse | Mount | Fast travel on foot routes without spending stamina on dashing | Three wild horses across the lake south of Bloomfield, from day 3–4; or 1,000G at the Animal Center |
| Reindeer | Mount | Doesn't slide on ice, so frozen lakes and icy paths stop being a problem | Tamed in the cold regions; it takes a lot of barn space |
| Camel | Mount | Crosses sand and quicksand where a horse struggles | Tamed in the desert; useful for the Sand Sea |
| Water mount | Mount | Surfs to islands you can't reach otherwise | Unlocked later; needed for some remote islands |
| Cat | Pet / companion | Pet it to restore stamina, about every three hours; its favourite food puts it in a hyper state with heat and cold protection, extra stamina and Wakeful (stay up late) | Animal Center, or tame one |
| Dog | Pet / companion | Follows you and protects you from aggressive wild animals | Animal Center, or tame one |
| Wolf | Pet / companion | Keeps you warm in cold areas | Wolf Hill, during the Bloomfield chapter |
| Bear | Pet / companion | Can knock down trees for you | In the wild; aggressive until calmed |
| Cow | Barn animal | Milk. You start with one | Given at the start; DLC cows from the shop |
| Chicken | Barn animal | Eggs, which some pets love | Animal Center |
| Sheep (lamb) | Barn animal | Wool: four wool make one fabric, which the bag upgrade and outfits need | Animal Center, 2,100G, from day 3 |
Players have also tamed foxes, dingoes, tigers and polar bears. This list grows as we confirm what each animal does.
Mounts: one for each kind of ground
- Horse: your first mount. Three wild horses graze across the lake south of Bloomfield; tame one on day 3–4 instead of paying 1,000G. Riding saves the stamina you'd burn dashing, and you can ride past angry animals.
- Reindeer: frozen lakes have slippery ice physics, and sneaking doesn't help. A reindeer doesn't slide. It does take a lot of barn space.
- Camel: for sand and quicksand, where a horse struggles.
- Water mount: unlocked later. It surfs, which is how you reach some of the remote islands.
Pets and companions
- Cat: the favourite. Pet it to restore stamina, then wait about three hours to do it again. Give it its favourite food (one player's cat loved eggs) for hyper mode: heat and cold protection, extra stamina and Wakeful, so you can stay up past midnight.
- Dog: follows you and protects you from aggressive wild animals. Good if wild encounters keep knocking you out.
- Wolf: the Bloomfield chapter has you befriend the wolves of Wolf Hill. A wolf keeps you warm in the cold.
- Bear: can knock down trees for you.
Barn animals and feeding
You start with a cow and a bird. Buy animals from the Animal Center from day 3: a lamb costs 2,100G and is worth it early, because 4 wool makes the fabric that the bag upgrade and many quests need. Aim for one of each type (cow, chicken, sheep, a mount and a cat), since quests ask for different products.
- Feed with any food you forage; turning weeds into feed takes 20 weeds per feed.
- Plant grass: it needs no watering, regrows two or three times, and makes feed.
- Let animals graze before you clean the barn, or they'll eat the feed you just put out.
- Unfed animals out grazing eat growing crops; a fence stops it, but grazing also improves the soil.
- Pet and feed daily: hearts max out in a few days, and maxed animals give the best products.
- Late game: the Lv. 3 Cleanmeister Autovac, Auto Feeders and Feeders automate the barn (the Fully Automated achievement).

Aggressive wild animals
Some wild animals, like wolves and bears, are hostile. They don't attack: standing near one slows you and drains stamina until you pass out, which costs a 500G rescue fee and most of what you carry. To get away:
- Drop some food on the ground and pet the animal while it eats. That calms it and builds friendship.
- Or back off: if you're not too close, simply moving away works. On a horse you can ride past.
- For good: revive the region's spirit tree, and its animals stop attacking.
Power Wisp skills and a dog companion also reduce how much wild animals affect you. More early-game survival tips are in the beginner guide.
Skills and hyper mode
Every animal has a base skill, shown in the Animal Center, and learns extra skills as you raise it. Skills vary from animal to animal, so two dingoes won't necessarily match. Each animal also has a favourite food: give it that and it goes into a hyper state that boosts all its skills for a while.
Pet and mount skills players have found
Each species draws its skills from a pool, so your fox may collect seeds while someone else's heals stamina. This is what players have reported so far:
| Animal | Skills seen |
|---|---|
| Wolf | Warmth (keeps you warm), Fight Enthusiast, Random Collector |
| Brown Bear | Breaks rocks and trees, Fight Lover, Warmth Therapist |
| Jaguar | Charges through rocks and trees |
| Dingo | Fight Enthusiast |
| Fox | Heals stamina, or collects seeds |
| Hare | Heals stamina, collects seeds, Telepath |
| Ferret | Heals stamina |
| Otter | Random Collector |
| Cockatiel / Little Owl | Carrier Pigeon: use a perch to reach your home storage |
| Brown Horse | Quick Feet (sprint), Bunny Jump |
| Dark Brown or Silver Dappled Horse | Bunny Jump, sprint |
| White Horse | Walks through swamp |
| Reindeer | Walks on ice |
| Camel | Walks on sand |
| Maplehill Sasquatch | Stamina boost |
Skills level up as you use the animal. Take it along or ride it and it earns experience; boarding it at the Animal Center works too, but slowly. Mounts learn to jump just from being ridden a lot. As a skill is mastered it turns into a stronger version:
- Quick Feet → High-Speed Movement → Light-Speed Movement (small, medium, then large speed boost)
- Bunny Jump → Wallaby Jump (spend stamina to jump obstacles; the upgrade clears bigger ones)
- Warmth → Warmth Therapist → Grand Therapist (petting warms and then heals you, and finally adds buffs)
- Fight Lover → Fight Specialist (intimidation stops slowing you down, then lets you calm the attacker; both still cost stamina)
- Carrier Pigeon → Air Mail (the perch link to your home storage)

Frequently asked questions
How do you tame animals in Echoes of Teradea?
Sneak up, pet the animal and give it food. Petting gives about one music note of friendship and food about two; at 4 notes it's tamed and you can take it home. You can only pet each wild animal once a day.
Where do you find a horse in Echoes of Teradea?
South of Bloomfield Village, across the lake: three wild horses graze there from the first days. Taming one is free; the Animal Center sells horses for 1,000G.
What's the best pet in Echoes of Teradea?
Most launch-week players picked the cat. Petting it restores stamina about every three hours, and its favourite food gives you heat and cold protection, extra stamina and the Wakeful status. A dog protects you from wild animals instead.
How do you cross ice in Echoes of Teradea?
Ride a reindeer. On foot or on a horse you slide across frozen lakes with almost no control; reindeer don't slip. For sand and quicksand, use a camel.
Do tamed animals all have the same skills?
No. Each animal has a base skill shown in the shop, and learns more as you raise it, and two animals of the same kind can roll different skills.
