How to read a customer's request

  1. Find the style words. Requests map onto style tags — “work” and “doesn't stand out” point to Professional; “glamorous” to Glamour; formal occasions to Elegant. Build the sketch until those tags are met before you spend any money.
  2. Note the hard “no”s. Prudence won't accept black and Priya doesn't want anything colourful — breaking an explicit rule costs more than a slightly weaker design.
  3. Check the budget. The client's budget caps your fabric and trim spending. Going over hurts the rating.
  4. Match the occasion to the fabric. Funerals and formal events suit silk or velvet; a gardening dress wants something hard-wearing like cotton or linen.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the first customer in Dressmaker?

Rose, the town librarian. Her first order is a professional work dress that doesn't stand out, which makes it a gentle introduction to matching style tags.

How many characters are in Dressmaker?

There are ten named customers with their own story arcs: Rose, Prudence, Priya, Marie, Edith, Fiona, Alice, Vivian, Adora, Dorothy. Other townsfolk also place smaller orders.

Can you make a customer unhappy on purpose?

Yes — the game invites you to satisfy or sabotage the townsfolk, so you can deliberately ignore a request. Expect a lower rating and less reputation when you do.
