Loftia Beginner Guide: Your First Two Hours
Updated
Your first two hours in Loftia come down to three things: get the Hammer, Pruner and Watering Can, pick up every material you see, and upgrade your battery before you build anything big. This guide covers the opening quests, tools, energy, permits and controls for the Steam Next Fest demo (live until October 26). It started from the closed beta (April 22 – May 6, 2026) and is checked against demo-week gameplay; demo changes are marked.
Your first hour at a glance
| Do this | How |
|---|---|
| Follow Pebble's quests | They unlock your plot, tools and the neighborhood; the map (M) marks who has a quest |
| Lock your farm (demo) | B → Tab → V, then set the farm to private or friends-only so visitors can't harvest it |
| Get Hammer, Pruner, Watering Can | The Hammer comes first; craft the Pruner as soon as it appears |
| Grab every material | Plastic, screws, metal scraps, tires and scrap wood go into most early crafts |
| Make cherry smoothies (demo) | Cherries no longer sell raw: sugar from Kun (5 Dew) + cherries → sells for 20 Dew |
| Upgrade the battery | You start with five charges; Scrap Wire + Mushroom Leather → Battery Lv.2 |
| Buy garden-bed permits | From Amani in Loftia City: more beds, more crops to sell |
| Donate to World Projects (demo) | Project Bot and Jun take daily donations; rewards buy limited-time cosmetics |
The opening quests
Pebble walks you through the start. These are the main quests from arriving in Loftia City to reaching the Hanging Gardens, which is where the demo ends:
| # | Quest | Given by | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A Fresh Start | Pebble | Loftia City |
| 2 | Meet Hazel | — | Your plot |
| 3 | The First Sprout | Hazel | Your plot |
| 4 | Meet the Makers | Pebble | Loftia City |
| 5 | Permission to Glide | Cliff | Loftia City |
| 6 | Certified Flying Loftian | Cliff | Loftia City |
| 7 | Your Daily Do-Good | Amani | Loftia City |
| 8 | A Call From the Gardens | Cliff | The Hanging Gardens |
- Talk to every NPC you pass. The game steers you towards some of them, then lets you off the rails, and it's easy to skip the rest. Side characters hand out quests that unlock items, blueprints and activities such as Adventures.
- Lost? Open the map. Key NPCs are marked, and an exclamation mark shows who has a quest for you. The map starts under cloud, so running around Loftia City early fills it in.
- Where you should be after an hour or two: Cliff's Permission to Glide. Finishing that chain gives you a glider and points you to the Hanging Gardens.
Get your three starter tools first
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hammer | Breaks boxes, crates, tires and scrap piles for materials. Levels the Salvaging skill. |
| Pruner | Cuts wild plants and mushrooms. Cheap to craft early and needed for the battery upgrade. Levels Foraging. |
| Watering Can | Crops don't grow on dry soil, so without it you wait for rain. |
You get the Hammer almost immediately. Craft the Pruner as soon as the recipe appears — it only needs a few early materials, and mushrooms are what unlock your bigger battery.
Pick up everything (and these five above all)
If you can see it, grab it. Story crafts ask for materials you can't buy, and players who hoarded early breeze through them. The five that turn up in most early recipes:
- Plastic discards
- Screws
- Metal scraps
- Tires
- Scrap wood

Setting up your plot
- Build one storage chest. It sorts everything into categories on its own, so one is enough. Each item has a cap (creators hit 20 Clay early on); raise it with the Expanded Chest perk.
- Upgrade the battery (next section) before big crafts.
- Add a power source. You can place one energy station at first; more need a permit.
- Build a water station next to your crops. It fills when it rains and gives unlimited refills for your can. You can also use a neighbour's — it never runs dry.

At the very start, every player's plot has its own copy of the starter materials. If you're one short, grab it from a neighbour's plot — it only disappears for you.
Energy and the battery
Every craft and dish spends charges from your battery. It starts with five, and some crafts — such as the workstation upgrade — need seven or more, so the upgrade is your first real goal.
| Step | How |
|---|---|
| 1. Gather | Scrap Wire from salvaging and Portobello Mushrooms with the Pruner |
| 2. Refine | Put the mushrooms in the Refining Station to make Mushroom Leather (about 30 seconds each) |
| 3. Upgrade | Craft Battery Lv.2 from your current battery, Scrap Wire and Mushroom Leather — it doubles capacity |
| 4. Power | Place a Small Solar Panel; Project Station Lv.2 adds water power that works in any weather |
Solar panels keep charging while you're away, so start a batch of refining or crafting before you head out and come back to a full battery.
Permits from Amani
Amani, in Loftia City, sells the permits that let you place more garden beds, energy stations, processing stations, tree plots and decorations. They cost Dew, which you earn by putting crops and food in your shipping bin. Garden-bed permits come first for most players: more beds mean more crops to sell. Prices and the fastest ways to earn Dew are on the Loftia money guide.
Don't forget the Progression tab
Press Esc and open Progression. Salvaging, foraging, farming, fishing and crafting each earn points you spend on perks. Beta players recommend checking it every session:
- Carry limits for scrap, mechanical parts and raw earth materials, and the Expanded Chest perk.
- A chance of double materials from the Hammer.
- The perks that give a 20% chance of 50% extra XP — they speed up every skill.
- A chance to refund an ingredient when cooking, which makes cooked food far more profitable.
Controls and settings worth knowing
| Key (PC, beta) | What it does |
|---|---|
| B | Inventory and placing items on your plot |
| B → Tab (X on a controller) → V | Guest permissions for your plot (demo) |
| R (hold) | Tool wheel — swap or remove tools, seeds and toys |
| R (tap) | Cycle between the tools in your quick slots (demo) |
| M | Map; right-click an NPC to drop a pin you can follow (demo) |
| J | Emote wheel |
| Esc | Menu: Progression, Collections, map |
| Shift + click | Move a whole stack to or from storage or the shipping bin |
Easy extras
- Pebble-athon. After the opening, Pebble waits in Pebble Park. Finishing the Pebble-athon tasks unlocks extra emotes and a beach ball for the "don't drop the ball" minigame.
- Datapads. Paper notes with butterflies hang around each district. They hold the story of Loftia and are tracked under Collections.
- Demo rewards. Entering the Player Neighborhood during Next Fest unlocks the Demo Banner, and your progress carries into Early Access. Details are on the demo page.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do first in Loftia?
Follow Pebble's opening quests, talk to every NPC you pass, and get your three starter tools — Hammer, Pruner and Watering Can — as early as you can. Pick up every material you see; almost all of it goes into early crafts.
How do I get more energy in Loftia?
Crafting and cooking use charges from your battery, which holds five at the start. Upgrade it with Scrap Wire, your current battery and Mushroom Leather (refined from Portobello Mushrooms), then place energy stations such as a Small Solar Panel. You need a permit from Amani to place more than one energy station.
Where do I upgrade skills in Loftia?
Open the menu with Esc and go to the Progression tab. Points earned from salvaging, foraging, farming and crafting buy perks such as bigger carry limits, double Hammer yields and extra XP chances.
Do I need more than one storage chest?
No. A single chest sorts everything into categories automatically. When an item hits its cap, raise it with the Expanded Chest perk in the crafting part of the Progression tab.
How far does the Loftia demo go?
Up to the Hanging Gardens. Cliff's Permission to Glide quest unlocks your glider, and the demo stops just before the Hanging Gardens.
